Why I Every Summer Love Country Style

Posted on 2012/07/24 by Mia in country, Flowers, nature & urban farming, SS 2012

Simple. Country style is summer. Thinking back to my childhood, the clearest memories invlove endless summers, summer houses and Grandma’s strawberry cake. Swimming in a lake or river, rag rugs on the floor and sun shining on the Swedish flag. Freshly-picked flowers all around in vases, and eating vegatables straight from the fields.

OK, I’m not doing a n o t h e r of my summer house dream posts – I’d soon need to change trendey’s name to summerhousey – this is just a nostalgic summery greeting. Happy Summer – and see you soon!

Smashing Bathrooms!

Posted on 2012/07/24 by Mia in Bathroom, eclectic, industrial vintage

I’m very easily inspired when it comes to bathrooms. I suspect it has to do with the Swedish tradition of not decorating bathrooms and instead keeping them sterile and top-to-toe (white-)tiled. Apart from some nice towels and a white or wood cabinet, they tend to look like a public toilet more or less! I appointed bathrooms the room of the year 2011, hoping for this country to leave – or at least move some steps forward from – the shiny oversanitized and bare (white) ideal.

I am by no means advocating poor, un-maintained and/or dirty bathrooms (!) No way. But just look what some conscious choices can do: copper pipes, a brass tap, discret moroccan tiles and some well chosen accessories when the rest is concrete (even that brush looks fab!))

Perfectly clean and (assumingly, at least totally necessarily) meeting high standards & requirements! And stylishly decorated. Even a mix of metals in the shower, wow for that! I am really fond of golden/copper/brass/bronze bathroom fixtures. They definitely do the trick. And hey, what about this one below. Beautiful room or what?

Charming Tiles

Posted on 2012/07/20 by Mia in AW2012, eclectic, Wallpapers

So, hope you’re having a wonderful summer! Last week I spent a few days in the prettiest Portuguese town on earth: Tavira. Firstly, here’s a link to the amazingly nice & stylishly renovated town house hotel we stayed in. It’s like a how-to on carefully renovating an old listed building, making it an interesting hotel. Anyhow, that’s not my point today. It’s about tiles, tiles and tiles! To warm you up, I’m sharing some lovely authentic Portuguese tiled exteriors.

Mind you, it is not those regionally popular public toilet tiles or the emergency room ideal we’re speaking about (blah!) It is way more charming. Pretty with an edge. Happy news related to this is the collaboration between Dutch company NLXL and Parisian boutique Merci: the wallpaper collection Brooklyn Tins!

Wallpapers designed to look like vintage tiles.

One colourway and version cooler than the other (there are many)

A fabulous new twist for the home decor Autumn of 2012. And you’ll of course ask where to buy – who wouldn’t -  I say have a look at NLXL’s site.

Some Summer House Features

Posted on 2012/06/29 by Mia in Colour Boosts, country, Garden & Outdoors, Guest rooms

Just to let you know, my dream summer house also features a guest room. I think I just found an ultimate example:

| via sköna hem |

It has it all. A cozy bed, a rocker and a fireplace, rag rugs, a nice clothes rail and enough space. And rethink the way out. The doors won’t lead to another room but to a lovely, seaside, garden.:) Below is a nice little place for guests too:

And this just sums it up. Summer!

Summer House Style

Posted on 2012/06/28 by Mia in country, DECOR PHILOSOPHY, Dining/Living room, Odd Chair Mix, scandinavian

The dream summer house I always go on about this time a year – here it is. Or well, a very good incarnation of it!

Built around the year 1900, period details intact, need some renovation but overall an old Swedish house in good condition. A sheer delight to refurbish a bit and decorate! This bathroom is already great. Clean and charming in one.

In terms of decor philosophy I would go with something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. A bit like this. Mishmashy and playful rather than strict. Creative and laidback. A place to truly enjoy.
