Spring 2011:s most interesting colour: Carrot

Hello and extremely welcome to trendey.com! Here’s me, Mia, sitting in my home office bringing you the bestest of interor decorating trends and tricks ;) Well some, like my mother, say it’s true :) Today’s topic is the most interesting though slightly hidden trend colour of spring 2011: Carrot. Let’s just say carrot, it’s the hues somewhere between pink coral and traditional orange. Somewhat yellowish pink-red. It’s an interesting new spark I’ve noticed lately, that goes extremely well with the sandy [new-white] base. I will use the sand and carrot combo myself in our bedroom so pics will be coming from that – but for now, an illustration of this too-hot-to-be-true spring colour:

yes, I’d take this attic

…no probs, I can sleep here.

In a loft apartment currently brokered by real estate agent Skeppsholmen. It has some pretty nice features this one; a total area of 243 m2, duplex, and a spacey roof terrace just to mention the basics. Stepped chimney, heating stove, blah blah..;) Love the atmosphere in this bedroom. The whitewashed walls, the harmony and the softness, especially when it comes to the bed which might be the most inspirational part. Wouldn’t this be the perfect spot for a hideaway retreat!

The New White

One of the clearest lines of development in the interior decor area is the movement towards coloured walls. Bye bye boring white! In particular, dramatic darks and – a new favourite of mine, even called the “new white” recently – the colour spectra with names like ‘nude’, ‘sunrise’ and ‘sand’. Light neutrals encompassing sandy light browns to pale sunrise yellows….A neutral but warm and uplifting background for many styles. This, dear friends, is a “trend colour” I firmly believe in.

For furniture and details it’s a well-used, even traditional, colour (just think of all light wood and leather) but for walls, trick is to find the right hue. I’m actually into it right now – our bedroom wall is currently a patchwork of four sandy shades. (Will come back on the exact colour choice later).

A nice kitchen!

This kitchen, featured by Sköna Hem, is similar to my idea of the dream kitchen. If you disregard the floor (I’d want either a nice tile floor or a rougher wood floor) and ignore the dining seating (I’d go for something similar to my previous post, added a sizeable kelim rug) – and – this is crucial – add the missing (or at least not viewable) stove, a big lavish signature piece (some delicious examples in my other kitchen post) Ok, and just one more thing: I’d take another colour (maybe black) of the fridge and overall spice it up a bit with e.g an unframed painting, some vintage items and a sweeping curtain. Now we’re about there.

A kitchen that’s spacious, functional and yet simple and not excessively expensive; the kitchen furnishing including the kitchen island in this pic is apparently from IKEA. Ok, now I just need a house ;)

subtle & stylish

Ouch… these pics from the home of photographer Emily Mccall are so nice I just have to post them (although they have been posted today already by both four walls and a roof and style made simple). I confine myself to the two pics that made the biggest impression, first the living room…..

White wire chairs have never ever looked this good! Together with the sacred expression given by the window decor, the painting…the pure white together with the chunky leather sofa – it’s something intriguing about it all. The dining area, below, is smashing too. The Panton chairs joining that beautiful table is an excellent case on how to boost the rough (or antique) table + sleek design chairs-combo.

CYRK – Polish Circus Posters

As you might know – and can read about in about trendey – this blog arose from a need to share things. More specifically, in the beginning, for me and Henen to share and discuss interior design ideas. Now she’s only calling me on the phone! Anyho, the other day we talked about this: CYRK posters. The circus-theme is an absolute favourite to me and CYRK art fits like a glove.

This art form has an interesting history. It’s quintessential of the golden age of the Polish School of Posters – a movement that began after the death of Soviet premier Joseph Stalin. From 50s through 1989 (the fall of Communism) the Polish Government financially supported and encouraged poster art (!) CYRK posters were first created in 1962, when the state circus agency wanted a revised look for the circus poster in order to upgrade the circus’ image. These new CYRK posters were not to be ads, but rather artistic renderings reminding the public that an exciting and modern circus was coming to town.

Posters were usually based on a single theme of common symbols; clowns, jugglers and animals, and are characterized by their display of painterly gestures, linear design, hand-lettering, metaphors, humour and vibrant colours. The Polish poster artists – treated favourably with respect, good salary and autonomy – became the spokespeople of society as their posters became the primary art form of the Polish nation. CYRK posters are not only fun in themselves as they are also the artists’ interpretation and commentary on society, often communicating to the viewer camouflaged political or social messages. It’s an artistic expression that should not only be viewed, but should also be read, pondered, and digested…

I’d take all of these, yes please! :)

The art of Polish posters attained international fame and the world’s first poster museum was opened in 1968. CYRK posters have now long been recognized and collected as a unique art form. They are sold in poster galleries (like where the pics above come from – with prices starting from approx $200) and in auction houses. It’s a must-have…! I my mind, I’m already a collector..

Trendey in Swedish – Klicka på flaggan till höger

There used to be a sister-blog to Trendey called Trendey.se, a Swedish version. I didn’t have time to manage two blogs so last summer trendeyse was shut down. Some of you, dear friends, family and acquaintances, have missed it. Missed the ease of reading in Swedish.

You see the tiny little Swedish flag in the right sidebar?

Press it and you’ll get a Swedish blog! I’m using a clever plugin called Transposh, it’s partly Google translate, partly human. If you go back in the archives it will bring you the weirdest Swenglish translations but as it has human (manual) element I’ll work on the translations making them fine as frog’s hair all through the site. So for the time being the Swedish translations are weird, to say the least, and sometimes really funny!, but it will get better.

And hey, if you see a reeeeaally strangely translated post, please leave a comment then it’ll all be quicker. Thank you darlings.

Update April 8 2011: due to a change of costume the Swedish version of Trendey is postponed.

The painting Flowers on the windowsill by Swedish Interior Style Creator Carl Larsson gets to accompany this info:

Pretty trendy huh? Flowers and houseplants will be a topic soon, vegetation is really in growth in the interior design area right now.
