Nomad: A Global Approach to Interior Style

Posted on 2011/11/14 by Mia in Bedroom, Book Reviews, DECOR PHILOSOPHY, globetrotter style, Wallpapers

Or Nomad – Bringing Your Travels Home is the title of Sibella Court’s latest book. It’s a photographic collection of travel shots and styled spaces. She has globetrotted and treasure-hunted to Japan, Italy, India, Syria and Mexico. Each place make a flavour with colour palettes and misc. stories. Room settings are inspired by ideas, photos and mementos, showing that any decorative background can be restyled with travel touches.

I realized I haven’t written a review about Sibella Court’s book Etcetera, but in comparison, Nomad is (imho) much more interesting. While Etcetera represents what I regard as typical Sibella Court-style – the glass jars, treasures from the bottom of the ocean, and ethnic-eclectic on smokey white vintage backdrops – Nomad takes a global step forward and delivers insprition from all over the world, still Sibella Court-ish and very likeable. My personal favourite among the exotic interior travels in the book is, at least after a first glance, Mexico!

Decorating a home is – like many other things in life -  a journey. But one needs not go travelling all around the globe in order to embrace the globetrotter approach to interior style. No tickets needed, just open this book and indulge! Or any other book, or movie or people’s home or nature or whatever inspires you. It is actually, in Sibella Court’s words, a matter of seeing things in a new way. And bringing it home. Sibella’s decor philosophy is about adding and subtracting, rearranging and recycling, transforming and rethinking a space to reflect your personality, lifestyle and adventures. The ideas can be as simple as painting a wall or creating a new ‘art wall’ or layering different textiles on your bed or hanging a new piece of fabric over your window. What the book Nomad wants to do, and does, is help open your eyes and fuel your imagination. After all, decor is all about stories and things reflecting you and your life. After reading Nomad, I feel the need for a touch of Mexico in my home.

And I’ve updated my top 5 of places I’d like to travel to:

  1. New Orleans, Nashville & Memphis (by a big American car, listening to Townes Van Zandt and June Carter)
  2. Clearwater Beach, Florida (for a loooong sunny vacation)
  3. Paris (been there once, 20 years ago; must go back and stroll along the bridges nighttime)
  4. Sri Lanka (the land of my brother-in-law)
  5. Buenos Aires (to exercise the Argentine tango)

Where would you love to travel? And would you bring it home? :)

Thailand is my top travel destination and I have taken a lot with me home… beautiful fabrics, buddhas and other “pynt” and I love it having a part of Thailand in my home!

    Great review of the book!

Hi Maja! :) Japan – exciting!

    Sounds lovely!

More often than not, I bring things home too…But our home actually have more global influences than the number of travels! For example, two lovely Turkish rugs, but none of us have ever visited Turkey :p And quite a few Indian pieces..

Many thanks for writing a note – happy week!

Oh man I’d love to travel the world. Most notably I’d love to visit Iceland, Sweden, Greece, and New Zealand. My own country, despite its size and diversity doesn’t seem to interest me too much, haha.

Hi, Good review, you got me interested in the book. My dream travel is Hawaii.

  • http://trendey.com Mia

Hah, that’s interesting! I’m so intrigued by the US. Have vistited Florida (and the Bahamas), NYC and Las Vegas and I loved it all….Americans are so friendly and it’s so easy to get around there! Plus, I love steaks :) Alongside TN and Louisiana + Gulf coast of Florida I have a whole range of US places I want to explore one day.. It’s cool that Sweden is on your list! Greece is lovely, but I guess it’s like with you and your country – for me Greece feels like a stonesthrow away and not so exciting, but a perfect summer vacation spot.

    great to hear from you!

Thank you! :)  Wow, yes Hawaii is on my list too :) Only drawback is, it’s like the furthest away you can go from Sweden, I think it’s about the same distance either way around the globe you go from here! (Flight is 20 hrs nonstop, usually approx 30h).

    1. Add Elvis and Willy Nelson to your playlist. Be sure to hit Shack Up Inn and Natchez on your way to NoLA.
    2. WHY? So many better places in FL unless you have a friend there.
    3. Oui.
    4. Yes.
    5. Si.

Wow – thank yous! :I I looked up Shack Up Inn and it’s one of the coolest places to stay I’ve seen…well ever, I think! Hah, wow..It got on top of the planning list. Natchez looks highly interesting too. You made my day delievering these treasures! Have some things to celebrate in the middle of next year so this brought new fire into my plans.

Oh, I’ve always dreamt of Clearwater beach, thinking the beaches are amazing there. Been to Ft Lauderdale, Miami and Orlando and am really excited about the gulf cost…Please come back and tell me if there’s anything nicer than Clearwater on that side of FL.!
