Masculine Interiors

I have received quite a few questions about male or masculine interiors. How To decorate for a man to feel at home. How to downplay the prettiness and the feminine vibe still keeping it beautiful. Being a believer in personal, gender-unspecific, what-ever-makes-YOU-happy-decor, I have no idea. Honestly. There’s no room for male and female decor in my world. BUT, there has been a bout more typical (stereotyped) masculine interiors lately. So I figure a little round of pics won’t hurt. And hey, just think of all the vintage suitcases and the industrial style. That’s in the masculine compartment isn’t it? The well-travelled globes? Hunted down animal heads? Mostly also the dark painted walls? Blame my (relatively) gender-equality-forward country for not knowing! Here’s a few pics the magazine editors said were masculine :)

Hi and thanks a lot for your note! You are probably absolutely right – the interest in decorating is key, no matter if you’re a man or woman. Great to here wives can be uninterested too, as the problem is so often described opposite! Many thanks for stopping by /Mia

Haha, you’re funny Mia. I appreciate your honesty on the topic. It is definitely a matter of personal opinion what could be described as “masculine” or “feminine”. While I do use those words to describe elements of design sometimes, I prefer to keep an open mind and as you said: the important thing is always that your decorating make you happy! Well and ideally it would make your husband or wife happy too, I suppose. :)

Hah – glad you appreciated it! :) It is a kind of complex topic this one! I guess if we disregard the feminine vs masculine-part of the issue (the part where I’m lost:)) there is a pretty interesting core question on how to decorate a home as a couple. One with love for dark colours, one who’s happiest in white interiors. Etc. Like in so much else the solution spells compromise, but compromising can be hard in decor! ;)

Yes you’re right, the core issue is definitely just how to compromise when tastes differ. I was looking at a bench online that I thought was gorgeous and when my boyfriend noticed it he nearly gagged. Haha. May be a little tricky whenever he moves in!

Haha, that has happened to me too =) My boyfriend is getting increasingly interested and thereby harder to trick, so things are more difficult now ;) On the other hand he contributes with his own ideas so the results are more interesting and it’s nice to have a home formed by both of the people who lives in it. I would have real problems with a strict, white-loving minimalist though! :D
