Eames DSW with numbers

Posted on 2011/04/11 by Mia in Chairs & Stools, Numbers & Letters

I just have to mention these lovely beige DSW, spotted at Danish auction house Lauritz, as they are deadly trendy. I tried to buy some about week ago, but gave up when price rose too high. Too popular. Can’t keep a secret like this though!

These chairs were specially manufactured by Herman Miller for American soldiers stationed in Germany. Each chair has a unique number and since they were designed for outdoor use the seats each have five holes for rain water.

At the moment there are no active lots on these, but in recent auctions the hammer price has landed on approx. 4500 SEK | €500 | £440 | $720 | a chair, including buyer’s premium (on average; they have been sold in pairs, and sets of 4 and 6 chairs – smaller and more worn groups less pricey per piece). Coolness!

Update April 15th: You can right now find these chairs, in a slightly stone/greyish tone, at Blocket (i.e. Swedish equivalent of Craigslist). A March auction winner changed her mind.

Update April 19th: There are now two active lots at Lauritz; 6 stone greyish/rough ending at 27th, 6 nicer/beiger closing at May 2nd.

Update April 26th: Now there’s another bunch of them for sale at Blocket! The second regretful auction winner in two weeks (!) What happened. Did they think the chairs were nicer IRL, I mean they are actually quite scraped, worn and …grey? Hm. Let’s see how the April 27th auction goes-  those chairs have same kind of ‘unpolished’ condition like the regretted ones at Blocket….

OMG they are awesome!! Would love to have four of those!! Do they turn up in auctions on a regular basis??

  • Mia

I know – they are gorgeous! :) Don’t quite get the historical background though as WW2 ended in 1945 and the design is of a later date. Guess the American soldiers stayed in Germany sorting things out after the war…Or, someone might know the proper story?

No regularity as far as I’ve seen – some sets of 6 were auctioned last fall, and now in March / April some gangs (4 and a pair) have shown up. Would expect a few more but who knows – they might have changed hands enough now for a while.

I’ve actually come to hate auctions – they are so unpredictable! Yesterday evening, I wanted to buy a thing for our bedroom wall and the price went from 700 SEK to more than 4 000 SEK in the last 60 seconds! And when you ponder it, only two people, me and another bidder, was needed to change the value of an item and raise it like that. IF ONLY that other person hadn’t been awake those few minutes :p

Mia, what do you think of mixing Eames shell chairs with other chairs? Do you have any ideas of which chairs match with them?

  • Mia

Oh, interesting question! I’d say yes yes yes, mix them with any chair! Any other chair you fancy. Have a look at the ”odd chair mix” tag, I’ve collected some mixing examples:

Or, don’t mix. Just follow your style, your instincts. Would you mix a pair of Prada jeans with a Topshop-t-shirt? Do you prefer a clean line? Look at photos and see if you like it or not. Listen to your gut feel. I sometimes find only (same-coloured) Eames together, like six of them, look too compact, but of course it has its advantages too. Neither way is right or wrong – so only thing I can say is: never mind ‘the rules’ – there aren’t any! :)

I wish I didn’t have such expensive taste! I love Eames. Perhaps one day I will be able to afford to mix one or two of these gorgeous chairs into my home.

  • Mia

yupp, i know exactly what your saying! If only I had never seen them at all.. and thought IKEA had the nicest of chairs…=) Speaking of mixing or not mixing chairs there is definitely a price aspect to it too. If I could afford anything in the world, I think I’d choose six vintage Eames DSW in various nice colours for my dining table :) Now instead, I start with two and for the remaining four I use a bit of this and that. Staring to get a bit tired of checking out flea markets in the weekends (and having a temporary solution) but sooner or later I will have found a sweet hodgepodgy chair team!

And another great thing is that one can build it step by step. I’m thinking that when I feel it’s worth it and have found another lovely but expensive chair I can just get rid of one of the odd & affordable.

Cool chairs!! I have seen them in military green, never in beige or gray!

  • Lillan

Hursomhelst – intressant fenomen!

  • Mia

Hi! :) Exactly, I saw them in military green first too, and it wasn’t really until I spotted the beige ones that the wow factor appeared…

The americans were in germany all the way to the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989..

Are you sure? That’s quite a long while to sit on a fancy Eames DSW chair :P Jokes aside, I wouldn´t be surprised if you are right :)
