Are Tripod lamps really THAT great?

24 Sep

Tripod (or three-legged) lamps are popping up everywhere and I mean everywhere. It’s virtually impossible to flick though more than a few pages in a home decorating magazine these days without coming across an interior design scheme featuring a tripod lamp. It’s clearly a must have in the decorating world at the moment! Here are a just a couple of examples to show you what I mean:

These three-legged little creatures have also managed to creep into a couple of posts here at Trendey, check out Mia’s posts Please Be Seated and Inspirational Rooms at Old School House. – Spooky how they get about!

So are the tripods really that great? Well, I am not completely convinced. I think they are nice enough – I particularly like the more industrial looking examples and those that look a bit like spotlights from some old Hollywood movie set – but I feel that they are just a bit OVERLY trendy just now and that makes me mulish. I’m not getting one until they go out of fashion. So there!

Anyhow, rough is beautiful

My dear, until yesterday I have lived in bleak unawareness of the existence of a webshop called anyhow! Anyhow offers a hand-picked selection of goods from wellknown suppliers and less-known independent designers. When found, I could easily identify some favourites.

I regret that the industry-shabby metal stool is sold out, if not I would probably have bought one without a blink. It’s the perfect piece to imperfect a room arrangement that’s become too polished and set. I also favour the simple luminaire with fabric-cord, and I would not protest if someone put this Madonna in my house. She is stone-coloured and made of a heavy stone-like material.anyhow

Oh, and today’s bargain: the kitschy and glamorous table clock. It has a vast amount of (non-precious!) diamonds, rubies and topaz, and measures 14×14 cm. Due to some minor blemishes on the top of the item the price is reduced to approx £17 (195SEK). Anyhow, this gold-mine discovery goes beyond the Swedish borders – anyhow gladely delivers to Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany and Great Britain (with an extra delivery cost of 100 SEK and with an maximum weight of 3 kg).

I want one of these!

And that’s the lamp I’m talking about.: Isn’t it great! The good old Anglepoise lamp has been around since the 1930s (invented by British motor car designer George Carwardine) and I bet most of us will have had some version of this lamp illuminating our desks at some point. The Giant Anglepoise Lamp is three times the size of the original lamp and was created in celebration of the 70th Birthday of the Anglepoise.

I really like this lamp! It’s so deliciously out of proportion and would make a cool design statement in any room (I want it in my study). Handmade in England, this lamp doesn’t come cheap however… prices range from £1,200 to £1,990 depending on colour (check out the range at Anglepoise)

Right, now all I need to do is go and convince my husband that we need to spend two grand on a giant desk lamp… erm… Just in case this should fail, I would consider settling for this one designed by Muno available at RockettsStGeorge. It’s actually rather nice as well and only costs £249!

Add a Twist with Gypsy Chandeliers

9 Sep

As I am hunting for a new apartment, many glimpses of Stockholmish homes pass my eyes. It is well known that the Scandinavian interior style is fresh, elegant and sleek. It has a neutral palette of colours and clean light elements of decor. Details are quiet; few, simple and uncluttred. Interiors are airy. In apartments I’ve looked at – mainly in houses from the turn of the century to the 1920s – floorings are close to always wide planks or parquet. Walls are white. White, white… white! (No wonder there’s a colour named “Stockholm-White”). Windows are naked. If decorated, with simple straight curtains. Personally, I get bored of all the whiteness. At the same time, I fancy the peaceful, stylish and airy fundaments of the Scandinavian design. What I’ll do? I’ll add a twist or two!

Now imagine a big airy living room with Stockholm-white walls, large clean windows, high ceilings and a dark-stained wide plank floor…Add to this a multi-coloured gypsy chandelier: A touch of boho charm and baroque class that speaks up and has something to express in the quiet northern interior.

Gypsy Chandelier Multi Colour, £85 from Dutchbydesign.com. It’s made out of metal and durable resin, and has a total length of 125 cm from the top of the chandelier to the bottom of the beads. For a low-ceiling room, a corner, somewhere with less space, there is also a smaller alternative, the Gypsy Mini Chandelier (below). The mini version’s dimesions are D.38cm H.28cm, and the price tag says £35. Let the interior talk!

Make your own eco-friendly chandelier!

recycled-cd-chendelier_69volivikchandelierclearMany designers have jumped on the environmentally-aware bandwagon and some are designing the most beautiful chandeliers out of discarded every-day objects. How about this grand statement chandelier from en Pieza made out of Bic Ballpoint pens (!), or this chandelier from Josh Owen recycling used CD packaging?

Don’t they look the business?

However, since designer goods tend to come with big price tags, why not have a go at making one on your own? Take a peek at these two beauties below to get your creative juices flowing (Jelly Bowl Lantern by Madeleine Boulesteix and Milk Bottle Chandelier by Droog).

I particularly like the milk bottle one! Imagine that softly glowing over a rustic wooden kitchen table…

Hmm… time to raid some dustbins for unwanted treasures I think!
