Urban Coolness & City Charm

Thursday September 2, 2010

A week or so ago, Henen wrote a post about how to go urban cool and decorate with a piece of London. This urban coolness is really hot at the moment! And has indeed been for quite a while. I love splashes of this kind of decor. I got a New York graffiti building – cushion for our sofa when we had just bought it (can be viewed in this post, the leftmost one on the sofa, fromTeo Jasmin).  And I wouldn’t say no to the garvey chair pictured above, from the news shelf at Anthropologie. A cool piece of furniture! Cloaked in upholstery printed with the names of New York City subway stations. It’s scuffed with an antique finish, and it’s low. Yummie :)

Urban coolness and city charm need not be only New York or London. Anthropologie news are also these nice cushions below with the streets of Paris and streets of Brussels:

…and I wish I could tell you about all the cool and charming Stockholm items, but sad to say: I haven’t seen any. (and as a side note: I swear they would be white anyway..=)) hope I’m wrong)

Go urban cool and decorate with a piece of London!

Monday August 23, 2010

For some urban cool and big city charm, a piece of London imagery could be just the ticket - especially if you’re a Londoner or an anglophile! :) The items below, with echoes of both the letters and monochrome trends, would look great in so many design schemes. I particularly like this print with the coordinates of the city of London (25 GBP) and the bus blind cushions (85 GBP) from Rockett St George. Am loving the on-trend charcoal grey+punchy yellow color combination!!

Also check out the real thing: Vintage London transport signs (starting from 189 GBP) are available from London Bus Blinds

And isn’t this 2 metres tall wall sticker of the Big Ben rather striking? It even includes a fully functioning clock! :) Also from Rockett St George at 120 GBP.

Sprayed street art meets gorgeous animals

@ Oddbirds – one of my favourite Swedish interior design companies. Currently showing at the autumn ’10 Formex fair. The Oddbirds collection ranges from furniture pieces, paintings, lamps and lovely cushions to bags, scarves, necklaces and notebooks. And DIY kits, not to forget. Colours, shapes and functions are cross-fertilized, so the result may be a bit of each! Always fun, always odd.

Inspiring images from DAY

Thursday July 29, 2010

Super stylish DAY Birger et Mikkelsen never fails to impress. The photos below by the talented photographer Ditte Isager of the DAY Autumn Winter collection 2010 are absolutely stunning. They make me want to buy everything that I see! (minus the girl’s hat – that’s not my cup of tea)

The images are crisp and perfect. The colours of the collection are beautiful. Rich and earthy reds and browns add elements of warmth to the predominantly black and white colour scheme. Soft wood is also in the mix as is the background colour…”blueish gray”? Don’t know what to call it, but surely there’s a better name for this colour? Whatever its name though, I love it. Definitely would go for that on my walls.

Now, from the collection,  if I was twist-my-arm-forced-to pick just three things, I think I would get this black desk with storage…

…a set of these quirky little things…

…and this pretty cushion…

For the full experience and to check out more pictures and products in the A/W 2010 collection, visit the websites of Ditte Isager and DAY.dk. And since we’ve long been fans of DAY here at Trendey, also check out Mia’s earlier posts on DAY.

Feeling the ‘folksy-ethnic’ vibe

Monday July 26, 2010

Above are details from some lovely rooms featured in Danish magazine RUM June 2010 issue. To the left, pillows made out of ponchos from Peru and rugs from Iran and Yemen create an inviting and homely ethnic/folk traditional look. To the right, a startlingly interesting space (a circus wagon in fact) is made even more interesting by the pretty and colourful folk art textiles. I’m warming up to this style, which is all about handcrafted textiles and furniture, patterns and multi- colours.

Some shopping inspiration below:

[Top left: Suzani bedspread from Yurdan, approx. 200-700 USD; Top right: Chair from Niki Jones 250 GBP; Bottom left: Plant pots from Graham & Green 39.50 GBP; Bottom right: Cushions from Niki Jones 38-60 GBP]

Great British Decor

Monday June 21, 2010

It seems the British Patrioric/Union Jack trend that Henen wrote about on September 2nd ’09 is remarkably durable (it was not even new by then). By mere coincidence the other week, I was just strolling through Debenhams heading for another shop, I spot this sweet cushion, that got to accompany me to the pay desk – and now it’s happily fused with the others in the sofa cushion collection. I enjoy seeing Union Jack around, it’s nice flag and a nice decor item! It has some special edge to it.

Even more, I like the Olde’ English Chesterfield sofa. Always trendy or trend-free, a classic. Below combined with, amongst other things, a nice Union Jack cushion.

..oh, and I have to include this one, the limited edition Union Jack version the Falcon 1092 Deluxe range cooker. A statement item for the kitchen, to put it mildly.

Ruuuuule, Britannia!

Punk-Chic Cushions

Wednesday June 9, 2010

If you have ever visited an AllSaints Spitalfields store then you know it’s an exquisite monument to the distressed style of decoration. Very urban, very industrial. Personally, I am indeed fond of the All Saints’ glamour-meets-grunge and creepy skull-meets-feminine fashion clothing. In particular, I love the shoes!

It wasn’t until recently I found out AllSaints also have a homeware range.

These two cushions below, the Double Cable Cushion (£ 150) and the Parachute Cushion (£45) will certainly bring the punk-chic London look straight home to your couch. Wheter combined with soft pretty or raw industrial, pieces like these add an understated cool edge to the interior.

Love Pillows

Monday February 15, 2010

This season is a whole lot about innovation, personality, creativity, colours and love. Every day is Valentine’s day, right? I have told you about her before, but here we go again: Wendinskan, one of my favourite pillow-makers. She uses recycled fabrics and stylized patterns of old embroidery books and makes the lovliest pillows/cushions. She has just released a new collection of colourful, romantic and lovely (!) love pillows. You will find them here, updated with new lovely pillows every week this spring.

To celebrate her new collection, she’s currectly holdning an auction on a very special pillow, Sweet Love Of Mine (below). It’s a pillow made of the finest old linen, lace curtains and other stuff from the 40 -, 50 – and 60′s. Embroidery of gold-coloured rayon. Zipper at bottom hem and inner pillow of down. 40 × 40 cm. Email your bid to info@wendinskan.se and watch the bidding here. The money from the love-pillow auction will go to MSF‘s fund for relief operations. Now I told you, perhaps you will outbid me…..as with the fast-selling bracelets and pillows of Uttran, it’s a shame!! Self-destructive! Can’t help sharing my treasures though :)

Super-Trendy ‘Aunt-Fur’ Cushions

Thursday January 21, 2010
Super-Trendy ‘Aunt-Fur’ Cushions

Some time ago, I told you about the lovely collection Bracelets of Uttran by Swedish designer and blogger Ida Överby. Since then, she has expended the range in her web-shop Creme de la creme with lovely leveled cake dishes of old china, nice bibs, rag rug-pillows and – what took my breath away – a new collection of ‘aunt fur’-pillows. I bought the prime edition, it’s called Naijma.

fav_cushion

The style is the very definition of trendy today: structures and surfaces in new combinations, unexpected colour matches and old classics that meet the very latest. ‘Aunt fur’ (Sw. tantpäls) refers to the old fur your aunt (or aunt’s aunt) used to wear, extremely soft and cozy but hopelessly outdated. Secluded at the back corner of the attic – it may be a controversial piece of fabric – but once there, it’s an asset to use and reuse.

uttran_cushion

In Naijma, the softest mink is intermingled with white cotton velvet. Piping and corner flaps are of lime-coloured Chinese silk and the fur-area is lined with a nice flowery patterned fabric. The opening is fastened with Velcro and at the back of the cushion sits a brass eyelet, which holds an old Sami leather cord. The present meets the traditional in an utterly (Uttran-ly! :)) well-composed and well-sewn cushion.

Slightly forked – I want them myself! – I urge you to look out for upcoming pillows in this collection. They are made from time to time, and sold through Creme de la creme. (Don’t look! ;))

Pillow by Wendinskan

Monday November 9, 2009

Maybe this is the most beautiful pillow I have ever owned.

wendinskan_pillow

The creator is Cecilia Wendin a.k.a Wendinskan. She makes the most wonderful pillows from old fabrics and scraps that she has passionately accumulated through the years. Many of the patterns she uses are from her great grandmother’s embroidery books. Wendinskan weaves in music, culture and everything else inspiring into the old motifs and thereby continues a fine old crafts tradition by renewing its expression. Her work can be purchased through her blog, where also special requests on colours, text, etc can be made, and at this coming site, where you can see current dealers.

Lay your head on my pillow. Can you imagine a more beautiful and appropraiate pillow to keep in the guest bed? This lovely mix of fabrics, beneath an ocean-blue wall? I can’t..! It’s so right it can ever be. My new pillow makes me happy. :)

Rule Britannia!

Wednesday September 2, 2009

The patriotic trend in interior decorating is still going strong and many furniture and design stores are stocking lots of trendey items with Union Jack motifs at the moment (at least in the UK they are, not sure whether this trend has reached beyond the British borders! =)). Anyway, check out these lovely cushions and throw from Graham and Green, the stylish cake tins from John Lewis, the rather special chair from Jane Hornby and the pretty cushion from Cox and Cox. Aren’t they great!

My favourite Union Jack item is this rug below designed by Vivienne Westwood though (visit the Rug Company for details). However, since I’m not rich as a troll (as the Swedish saying goes) and since the Westwood rug costs around £2,000, I wonder if I could make the rug on the right from Cox and Cox (@ £135, kid not included) look like Westwood’s with a bit of abuse?
