Summer of 2011: Home Decor Trends

We are just moving into a new home decor season – the lovely fall of 2011 – so what suit better in this downtime of news than to (again) summarize some ongoing trendiness. Without claiming to be complete, of course. Now to start, the allover trend is of course UNDECORATE! Coined by DwellStudio’s Christiane Lemieux, the no-rules/non-decorating approach to interior design is gaining ground steadily. A close friend to, and sometimes inseparable from, the good ol’ (awesome!) eclectic style. Laid-back, funny and personal.

All the oddities. Of any kind. Busts, psychology heads or any other fairly quirky & odd object. The science trend also shows a lot of anatomy posters, bell jars, eye tests and well, you name it. And we’re into retro, retro, retro! Retro might be the strongest trend of the 2010′s, so far and I wouldn’t be surprised if totally (I mean we have yet to see the full swing of 80s and 90s.). Moving on, home decor smacks of creativity. It’s the #1 feature of the undecorator. Personal collections in a variety of ways, e.g. mood boards, are typical (and functional) interest-adders to a room.

And the letters and numbers of course (companioned with vintage signs and messages). Oh, and the hotter than hot drinks trolley. Crazy popular.

Wallpapers are as popular as dark or mildly painted walls (or white walls, but I wouldn’t admit that, you know how I feel about white :p) Preferably Granny’s old wallpapers. And we’ve seen loads and loads of world maps and globes:

Riding us into the globetrotter-trend. With kilim (or kelim), ikat and other ethnic inspired fabrics and patterns. And to close for today, all the wild & creative frame groupings. To display art, pant hangers are useful or well, just ordinary clothes hangers can also do.

Some displays & frame groupings

This is a home decor chapter I find really interesting: frame groupings and displays. A person’s home actually tells a story about that person. If not about nerdy interests and exotic adventures (or the love for white and cleanliness ;)), it does say a lot about what is dear to that human. In my opinion nothing is more thrilling and enjoyable than rooms and homes that speaks! Speaks stories, speaks loud, and speaks well, different style languages. A home full of character or at least: some. And displays of various kinds serve that purpose very well.

Ten globes are really cooler than one, don’t you think?

Here’s one of the best DIY-ideas I’ve spotted in ages: using pant hangers!

That’s such a great way to display a doll collection.
And lastly, book shelves, literally speaking. Love it!

The Retro Vibe

The retro trend shows no signs of cooling off – quite the opposite! In 2011, we love things retro, calling on 50s and 70s mainly it seems, but all decades from 70s and further back are having a groovy revival. One single retro detail (like a vintage radio, retro phone, etc), some pices of retro furniture or full mid century nostalgia – all variations are present. I love this space, from the home of Hilda Grahnat. It’s interesting, laidback and pretty – and smashingly trendy.

I even spy a rag rug! And I love the license plates. I actually have a really nice German temporary license plate saved from when I went to Germany in 2006 and bought myself a car. It has been hanging in my father’s garage since but some time ago I brought it home and it’s now standing on a kitchen shelf! (And actually, my father revealed Henen had taken the other one!! Had no idea, cool we were both hunting number plates. And Henen, of course you can have my other plate, good there are always two)) Also, I really like this wallpaper below from Sanderson‘s 50s collection. It reminds me of the beloved Granny-style wallpapers I used to hunt (without result, may I add. Though I still dream of finding an old house with original wallpapers intact). Anyhow, a nice composition this one.

Lastly, a fresh retro-ish space via Style by Emily Henderson. Rarely have whiskey looked this neat! A great and so harmonious display on the sweet retro cabinet. And the tree/greenery – I love it that houseplants and flowers are visiting interior scenes again. Not a decade too late!

Friday it’s Midsummer’s Eve! I will go the midnight-sunny North and I will collect seven different wild flowers and put under my pillow to sleep on. Always have. (and never remembered what I dreamt!) See you when I see you.

Beige Love

This spring I’m in love with beige. The New White. So sad it has such a ‘beige’ name, because with this colour in home decor, things aren’t automaticly weak and dull – quite the opposite: beige actually has more spirit than white (what colour hasn’t?!), it’s earthy and pleasant; it’s the ideal backdrop to many many styles. Just look at these pics and tell me beige aint beautiful…Our bedroom walls are now painted and ready and we are so happy with the results! (We used Farrow & Ball’s Matchstick, an amazing hue, will get back with pics soon) Also, it seems we’ll go for beige dining chairs! Enough love bombing on beige now, here’s two more lovlies.

The Toffee Feel

Isn’t it something toffee about this pic? In terms of the upcoming caramel-trend.

Trendy details: Numbers, Globes and Vintage Phones

Move over letters, it’s the numbers turn now…

World globes are all over the place at the moment. And that’s great as far as I’m concerned. I’ve always liked globes - they’re decorative, fun and useful, and what a literal take on the global trend! :) I think globes are particularly nice in groups or in unusual places, like in a kitchen.

Vintage or retro phones have been around for awhile and judging from the frequency they now pop up in interior decor pics and the amount of retro phones for sale in stores, they are more popular than ever. I love the way they look, but I wouldn’t want to replace my handy hands-free phone with one that needs to be plugged into the wall. Looks great as a purely decorative object though..
